We all want significance and purpose. Well there is good news! You can find purpose right where you are. How? Put your heart and soul into every activity you do today! Work willingly with a joyful heart and a good attitude. Developing the daily discipline of choosing joy and a good attitude will help you discover your purpose. Your purpose could very well be something you are already doing, but you are missing the significance because of your attitude (ahem, motherhood. Preaching to myself here.)
The next step is developing the right perspective. The ultimate Master you are serving is Christ. Matthew 25:40 says ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.”
I will be the first to admit, doing laundry did not make me feel like I was serving the Lord. But if Jesus was staying at my house, you better believe I would use laundry scent boosters, there would be an abundance of fresh flowers, and there would be snacks galore! I would want him to feel at home, loved, and cared for. The funny thing is these are the exact things I do for people that stay at our house. I find delight, and see the significance in these ordinary chores, because my perspective is in the right place. I know that I am not only serving our house guests, but I am ultimately serving Jesus.
Colossians 3:23 is framed in my laundry room. I need the daily reminder of this truth, because it is easy to lose sight of purpose in the mundane. Folding the laundry is not only an opportunity for me to serve people, but it also gives me the chance to praise and thank my Father. I thank Him for providing clothes, clean water, and for all the people He brings to our home. I praise Him for being good, trustworthy, and exceeding my wildest dreams.
When we have the right attitude and perspective, any activity can be transformed into holy ground. The question is, will we choose it?
Reflect & Respond:
1: In what area of life do you need an attitude adjustment? Share with a friend, and ask them to hold you accountable to your new and improved attitude.
2: Praise God while you work. Thank Him for the things you often take for granted. Praise pulls us into intimacy with the Father.
3: How can you serve someone in need, and therefore serve Jesus today?
Encouragement: You HAVE significance. The people God has placed in your life need YOU.
