Small Steps of Faith

I remember the day my daughter took her first steps like it was yesterday. With all of the excitement, fear, and insecurity wrapped up in wobbly little feet, she lasted exactly three seconds before she collapsed. My reaction was the only thing she was looking for in that moment. I praised her like she had just won an Olympic gold medal! I was so proud of the beginning of her lifelong journey she began that day, and those three seconds were some of the most special I had ever experienced.

Our heavenly Father is very similar in how He sees us. When we first start our journey with Jesus, He rejoices over us. He never despises us in our efforts or questions why we aren’t farther along in our journey. Each and every day, He longs to see our baby steps grow into a mature, established faith that is unwavering. In the context of Zechariah 4:10, Zechariah was encouraging the tribe of Judah to rebuild the temple. The people had started to build it, but they were forced to stop construction due to Samarian opposition. Once they were allowed to start building again, they were discouraged, feeling as if their temple could never be as majestic as the original, Solomon’s temple. Zechariah reminded them of how God viewed their work. God wasn’t going to compare their temple to the original, but He wanted their hearts to be completely dedicated to the process. The people wanted everything to be perfect for the presence of God to exist within the temple, but they were too absorbed in the fear of failure. They lost sight of what God had called them to do.

Today, God’s Spirit dwells in the heart of every believer. We are the temple where God’s presence resides! He is always delighted to see our steps in growth towards Him, no matter how insignificant the journey may seem to us. 1 Corinthians 1:28 says, “God chose things despised by the world, things counted as nothing at all, and used them to bring to nothing what the world considers important.” Dear friend, Jesus loves you and sees you right where you are today. He wants to connect with you in every step of your journey.

Reflect & Respond:

1. Take some time to reflect on when God showed up in your life in a great way. He is working in your life right now, even if you can’t see or feel it. Hold on to confident hope.

2. Ask God to reveal opportunities in your life, and be faithful with what you have been given. Don’t disregard small steps of faith; pursue them with your whole heart.

3. One of the most effective ways to grow in our relationship with Christ is to serve and encourage those around us. Make a list of people in your life who may be struggling with a “small beginning” in their life. Think about ways you can rejoice with them in their efforts, just as God rejoices over you!

Encouragement: God rejoices over every step you take in your walk with Him. Be courageous as you stand firm on His promises. Never lose heart when you feel your steps are insignificant because the Lord sees you as significant!
